About WHAT

CELEBRATING 50YEARS OF CAMPAIGNING FOR A BETTER WEST HAMPSTEAD!

WHAT is your local amenity group covering the whole of West Hampstead, Fortune Green and parts of Kilburn and South Hampstead. Our goal is to make West Hampstead a better, safer and more pleasant place for everyone. We cover buses, tubes, trains, traffic, environment, rubbish, essential services.

We fight for public transport users and pedestrians, and for a cleaner and more sustainable environment. We’re experts in rubbish and recycling. We have regular meetings to make representations to Camden Council, TfL and utility companies. We work with other local groups on development issues like the O2.

WHAT started in 1973 as a protest against traffic schemes that would have turned some of our local streets into major through roads. Since then, we campaigned against scrapping the C11 bus (in 1981) and we supported the building of the new West Hampstead Overground station. We continue to fight for a lift at West Hampstead tube station. Camden accepted our proposals to make the West End Lane crossings safer.

We campaigned against the use of disposable coffee cups. We’re still trying to make West End Lane and Kilburn High Road safer for pedestrians. We also arrange public meetings and election hustings so that you can quiz the officials and elected members about the local issues of the day.
